Blake Shelton: Country's Newest 'Sexiest' ManPeople Magazine Puts Country Hitmaker on 2008 List of Hottest Hunks
Country singer Keith Urban is likely used to being called "sexy" by mainstream media. But for Blake Shelton, the designation is nothing short of a "new superpower."
Hit-country singer Blake Shelton, in large part, credits his recent and first-time inclusion on People magazine's list of the sexiest men alive to the fact he doesn't drive a "wussy" truck. Specifically, in the Nov. 19, 2008, issue of the popular entertainment magazine, the 6-foot, 5-inch Shelton, when asked about what makes him appealing, said: "The wussiest thing a guy can do is drive a clean truck. Dents, scratches and mud—that's manly." Of course now, since conducting the aforementioned interview with People about his upcoming inclusion on its sexiest lineup, the down-to-earth country music artist conceded he didn't really "understand what the deal was" at the time. Country Music Singer Doesn't Think He's Sexy"I knew that the (People) interview was going to be about being a bachelor, but I didn't really understand what the deal was," Blake shared in a Dec. 1, 2008, interview with The Boot. "So I did the interview, and I said some stupid stuff! And then I found out it was a big deal—one of their biggest issues. And so I thought, 'You know, somebody somewhere must have taken a really good picture of me. I don't think they must know me very well!'" The platinum-selling singer, with the cameras rolling, good-naturedly agreed to hit the streets of New York City recently to "test" his new sexy-man status. Although Shelton didn't appear to be too enamored with his own "sexiness," if you will, his YouTube video showed that New Yorkers—at least those who were nearby on that particular day, were even less in awe of his inherent magnetism as a sex symbol. "Now that I have this new superpower, we're gonna test it out on the ladies," Shelton, complete with a name tag, remarked to the camera as he hit the Big Apple's streets. "Let's just see what kind of effect I have on people now." In the end, however, "This is really not working out like I thought," concluded a somewhat-defeated Shelton, who seemed to feel anything but sexy. Nevertheless, for the 32-year-old hitmaker and country-fan favorite, the best thing about the high-profile recognition he's received from his official "sexiest man" honor is that his hairstylist mom, Dorothy, who still resides in his Ada, Okla., hometown, "will cut that page out of the magazine and tape it to her mirror and point it out to everybody who comes to the shop," he has said. Blake Shelton Releases New Country Album for Fans, RadioAlthough his inclusion on People's annual list has been fun, if not somewhat amusing, for Shelton, these days he's focused on his newly released album, Startin' Fires, his fifth CD to date and the follow-up to his highly successful Pure B.S., which included his latest No. 1 single, Home. Additionally, while his Home hit featured Shelton's girlfriend, fellow country singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert, on harmony vocals, the singer's new disc contains a bare-bones duet by the pair, complete with authentic cricket sounds, among its tunes. The not-your-typical love song, Bare Skin Rug, was penned by the country couple, both of whom live in Oklahoma these days, and per Shelton, the two hit artists are so musically divergent "that it's a thousand wonders that we even have a song that we wanted to sing together." Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert: Country-Star Couple Writes, Records DuetRegarding the song's impetus, "One night, we were just sitting around the fire pit by my house, drinking beer and playing guitars like we've done a hundred times, and we started writing this goofy song," the two-time CMA Awards nominee told The Boot. " We loved it and thought it was hilarious, so we decided to make this our duet. "The last thing we wanted to do was the big cheesy love ballad," he added, referring to the unending requests the couple receives to perform together on record. "If people want to hear us sing together, then we're going to give them the real version of it. We recorded it the same way we wrote it. The crickets are real in the background—it's raw and it's not perfectly in tune. So if people are ever interested in what Miranda and I do when we're at home, that's it right there." Shelton's Career Plans: PBS Program Performance & More Concert Touring In the meantime, the ever-sexy, ever-humble Shelton—who's landed 14 songs on the country charts to date, including four No. 1 singles—will appear and perform in the new special, Hitman: David Foster and Friends, that airs Dec. 3, 2008, on public television's PBS affiliates.
