Reba McEntire Leaves MCA Records After 25 Years

Valory Music Co. Scores Big with Signing of Million-Selling McEntire

Nov 12, 2008 Lisa L. Rollins

Reba McEntire, one of the most successful female recording artists of all time, has left her longtime label home, MCA Records, after 20-plus years.

Red-tressed country superstar Reba McEntire—who also boasts success on film, Broadway and TV, including her top-rated Reba situation comedy—announced Nov. 11, 2008, through her new label, The Valory Music Co., that she has parted ways with her longtime record company, MCA Nashville.

Record Company Move: From MCA Records to Upstart Valory Music Co.

Nearing its first-year anniversary, the still-new Valory Music Co. is the sister label to Big Machine Records, which boasts a roster that includes new country artist Taylor Swift and Texas singer-songwriter Jack Ingram, among others. In just under a year, Valory has yielded impressive out-of-the chute success since its November 2007 launch, with a No. 1 country-debut album by multi-platinum recording artist Jewel and a recent three-week No. 1 single, Do You Believe Me Now single, by country-soul singer Jimmy Wayne.

In a press release from her new label, McEntire said, “I am thrilled to be joining the Valory team. (Label chief) Scott (Borchetta) and I worked together on some of the biggest singles of my career, and I am excited to renew our partnership.”

Now president and CEO of The Valory Music Co. and Big Machine Records, the California-born Borchetta worked with McEntire during his tenure at MCA as the senior vice president of promotion.

Hit-Country Music: McEntire Top-Selling Artist, Touring Act for MCA

During that time in the 1990s, MCA Nashville is considered to have been in its heyday and was named “Label of the Decade,” with Borchetta helping McEntire blaze a bold trail of dominance in regard to country-radio airplay, music sales and country-concert touring. The big-scale results that McEntire achieved on those fronts is credited with “raising the bar” and aiding female country artists who followed in her footsteps.

During their prior working relationship, McEntire and Borchetta achieved stellar results during two different tenures together at MCA Nashville beginning with McEntire's Rumor Has It release. While working with Borchetta at MCA Nashville, McEntire earned fourteen No. 1 singles and sold more than 22 million albums.

“It is as if a day hasn’t even passed,” Borchetta remarked, referring to McEntire’s addition to The Valory roster. “The toughest thing about leaving MCA Nashville again was leaving behind this relationship that I value so much. It is with great honor that I announce … Reba McEntire will now exclusively record for The Valory Music Co.”

New Country Single, Debut Valory Co. Album at Radio in 2009

McEntire’s debut single on The Valory Music Co. will land at country radio in spring 2009, with her new studio album set for summer release. The upcoming CD will follow the singer’s Reba Duets CD that debuted on both the country and pop charts at No. 1. Each of singer’s last 13 studio albums has surpassed the 1 million mark in sales.

To date, McEntire has sold 55 million albums worldwide and scored 33 No. 1 songs. She has two Grammy Awards, seven Country Music Association Awards, nine People’s Choice Awards, 12 Academy of Country Music Awards and 15 American Music Awards. Aside from her acting credits, the Oklahoma native also is an author and designer of the REBA brand, which includes clothing, footwear, home collections and other products.

Valory is shaking the establishment machinery in NashVegas. Never thought Reba would leave MCA. Did not know she had sold that many records and had that many number one hits. Reba is a powerhouse.
