It's not too often you'll see this happen. Rascall Flatts has the number one song on the country music charts AND the number one song on the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts, and it's NOT the same song.
'My Wish' moves up one spot to bump out Carrie Underwood's 'Before He Cheats' for the number one country spot, meanwhile 'What Hurts the Most' is holding the number 1 AC spot.
Only three times has this ever happened in country music history, and they have all been fairly recent. The Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill pulled off the same monumental task as Rascall Flatts did this week.
What we are seeing now, is the emergence and acceptance of country radio on the AC radio stations. Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Rascall Flatts, Keith Urban, and many more have all had a good amount of airplay from the adult contemporary genre. It's creating a wider gap in the type of country music being released from Nashville. There's a drastic difference in sounds if you have a song like "You'll Think of Me" followed by Joe Nichols "I'll Wait For You."
Can such a difference of styles survive in the same format? We'll find out as the battle of contemporary country vs. tradition country rages on.
